Axis Syllabus Workshop Cycle Basel 2022

THE AXIS SYLLABUS –  AN OPEN-SOURCE RESOURCE & TOOL BOX
The Axis Syllabus is a constantly evolving reference system, or lexicon for the organization and cross-correlation of empirical and scientific findings from the study of human movement. This includes anatomical details, physics, practical applications, research, analysis and transmission. „Syllabus“ is Latin for list or table of content, while “Axis” refers to the points and through-lines that provide a referential grid for sensing volume and tracking movements through the kinesphere. It is our experience that the awareness of volume, direction and mass facilitate a more accurate perception of physio-dynamics, furnishing the basis of more appropriate reflexes and responses to the mover.

A fundamental aspect to this approach is to encourage informed self-monitoring and individualized applications, in the full recognition that although we share a similar body-plan, each has different proportions and tone, and these values alter the equations we must formulate to solve the problems of moving. Understanding and respecting the properties of the body’s structure we can evaluate our choices for efficiency and functionality. The information is often transmitted through dance, though it is relevant to anyone in a body. As such, Axis Syllabus classes can also be found in walking, movement for elders, kids classes, aerial disciplines, natural horsemanship, tight rope walking, stilt dancing, contact improvisation or partnering, capoeira, and countless other disciplines.
